Week 7

Mar 7, 2021

There is no class recording this week because I forgot to press the record button (oi!) Here are my teaching notes in case they are helpful.

The Law - Video 13
Description: The laws in the bible fit into the narrative and are written in the style of prose-discourse. They serve 2 purposes, 1) to define what God calls good or not good and 2) to help Israel see what they need to change.
Holiness - Distinct from other nations, symbolic Leviticus 20:22-23
Example: Leviticus 21:1-3
There are 3 things that defile, blood, a dead body, or semen. What's the common ground?
Justice - What is RIGHT and GOOD
Example: Deuteronomy 24:14-15
There is a reason for these laws, often connected to protecting the vulnerable.
Sacrifice - How to get right with God
Example: Leviticus 5:17-19
Sacrifice is about getting right with God. The reason it is an animal is a cultural one because it is something of great value. It is a recommitment to God where you show that you mean it. How many have experienced when someone says they've changed but didn't actually change?
7th-day feasts - How to live in creation
Example: Deuteronomy 25
The year of jubilee/ sabbath.
They all show how God's wisdom should be applied in that culture, but not necessarily in ours. The question is not can I obey this law but can I see God's wisdom in the law, and apply it to my life?
