Unlocking True Greatness Through Humble Service

Aug 17, 2025    Kristina LaCelle-Peterson

This Sunday, we welcome Kristina LaCelle‑Peterson. Kristina is a pastor in the Free Methodist Church and a professor of religion at Houghton University. She’s spent years helping students and churches connect the teachings of Jesus to everyday life—especially when it comes to living out our faith with integrity, compassion, and a commitment to justice. Kristina has a deep love for Scripture and a passion for the church to grow in both truth and grace. We’re honored to have her share God’s Word with us at Valley Chapel this Sunday.

In this insightful sermon by Kristina LaCelle Peterson, she explores the narrative of James and John from the Book of Mark and their misguided request for seats of power next to Jesus. Kristina highlights the common human tendency to seek power and recognition, contrasting it with Jesus' teachings of humility and service. She encourages the congregation to introspect on their true needs and desires when praying, advocating for a shift from seeking glory to embracing a path of selfless love and service exemplified by Jesus. With a message of inclusivity, Kristina underlines that everyone is invited into a close relationship with Jesus, while warning against the temptation to assume moral or spiritual superiority over others.
